Shortly after World War I, the “father” of American anthropology, Franz Boas, wrote a letter to The Nation, denouncing archaeologists who had “prostituted science by using it as a cover for their activities as spies.” Price recounts here the complicated and hidden history of professional archaeologists who were spies or engaged in espionage. Nearly a century later, Boas’s words still haunt the profession, as the debate continues over archaeologists acting as spies.
